Parachute - A Game&Watch Tribute

February 18, 2009

Do you remember the old Game & Watch games? The little handheld one-game toys with simple and fun games? There was one called Parachute, which was one of my favourites.

Sometimes it's fun to throw something quick and easy together, so I did a simple remake for Windows:

Parachute Game & Watch tribute

You can download it here:

And as usual, the source code for the game is public domain, and available here:

The original game looked like this:

And I've tried to stay faithful to the original, at least the way I remember it... but it was so long ago :P

Btw, thanks to my old friend Per Ekengren for the music, which he made years and years ago...

I never played the original Parachute game, but it definately reminds me of the little pocket LCD games I played years ago. Nice work! The graphics and timing are spot on.

Hey Mattias! That's really cool :) I have been looking over the latest Pixie Engine and it looks very nice. It would seem straight forward to do an OSX or iPhone port :) Hey, I am wondering if you wouldn't mind putting down some thoughts on the software rasterizer. These are few and far between... How does it perform? I think Pixie's most interesting aspect is the potential for great compatibility. Requiring end users to install DirectX 9 and video drivers would be great to avoid! Having some basic software 3d would be nice :)

Thanks :-)

Yeah, compatibility is one of the top design goals for me. I like to just be able to make the game, and then having it run everywhere :D

Porting to OSX is something I'd really like to do, and as soon as I can afford a Mac, I'll get to it :D Anyway, if someone reading this would like to give it a go, I'd be happy to give any help I can, explaining things in detail etc.

As for 3d software rasterization - I do have plans to implememt one for the 3D addition for Pixie, but I've barely started on that bit. I guess this is slightly confusing though, as there's a "SWR" set of classes in Pixie currently, though they are not meant for realtime use at all - they are leftovers from when I was working on a project where I generated the 2D graphics on-the-fly, so they are meant to produce high quality renders, not realtime renders.
